Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, is home to the oldest, second largest in population and by far the most visited Old Order Amish settlement in North America. The Amish people originated in Europe. Seeking religious freedom, they migrated to America in the early 1700s. They made Lancaster County their homeland.
The Amish dress in plain clothes. The men wear beards and wide-brimmed hats. The women have ankle-length dresses and bonnets. The Amish worship in homes, attend one-room schools until grade eight, farm with horse-drawn equipment, drive buggies and speak the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect.
Across America, leftover values are disappearing. In Lancaster County, they flourish among the Amish who respect and practice them. The Old Order Lancaster Amish settlement is about leftover values. Today, some 22,000 Amish people live in Lancaster County. Their presence has made this area a national, even an international, tourist destination.
